Cursive G
Among the small letters of one font, a, q and y look like the small g, and this page shows all three beside it. It shows g in cursive in that font, capital and small, and describes both letters. Lower down the small g is drawn again inside words such as gloater, surgery and coveting.
The small g stops at the x-height, so above the baseline it rises only 0.51 as far as the capital G, which reaches the cap height. But the small g is the one that drops below the baseline, and the capital does not. Counted from top to bottom, that makes the two almost equal: the small g is 1.01 of the capital. In width it is about half, 0.51.
Capital G, four enclosed spaces
A blunt tip on the baseline marks the far left of the capital G. A line climbs from that tip toward the upper middle and runs into a closed loop at the top. The upper edge of the loop touches the cap height.
Out of the loop a curve swings up to a blunt peak at the upper right. The peak stays below the cap height. Under it a slanted line comes down, rounds to the left along the baseline and climbs to a point on the left, at about the x-height.
A long, nearly straight bar runs from that point on the left across the whole letter. It ends at the right, between the baseline and the x-height. The lines of the capital pass over one another in several places, which leaves four enclosed spaces in all.
Small g, a wide loop below
Above the baseline the small g is a closed oval that lies against a slanted line on its right. The oval and the line both top out at the x-height.
The slanted line carries on below the baseline. There it bends left into a wide loop that reaches the descender line. The point of the small g furthest left is on this loop, below the baseline. The loop is closed, so the letter has two enclosed spaces, one above the baseline and one below it.
The line that comes back up from the lower loop crosses the slanted line at about the baseline. Past the crossing, a little above the baseline, it ends at the right in a blunt tip.
A knot of lines and a round part
The capital G and the small g share almost no shape. The capital is a knot of lines with a loop at the top, and the small letter is a round part with a loop underneath. The capital has four enclosed spaces to the small letter's two. And only the small g leaves the baseline, dropping as far as the descender line.
After n in coveting, peddling and tackling
The last three words, coveting, peddling and tackling, all end in g with an n before it.

The small g next to y, q and a
Among this font's small letters, y, q and a look like the small g.
The small y drops below the baseline into the same wide loop at the left, and like the small g it comes back up across the baseline to end at the right. The tops differ: the small g is closed at the x-height, and the small y is open there.
The small q and the small g are alike above the baseline, where a closed oval sits against a slanted line at its right. Below the baseline the small g makes a wide loop out to the left, while the small q makes a narrow loop straight down.
For the small a, the comparison is on that letter's own page.
