Cursive P

A slanted line with a rounded part on its upper right: the capital P and the small p of one font both fit that description. This page shows p in cursive and says where the two letters part ways. It names two other capitals of that font that look like the capital P, which are R and B. And it draws the small p inside ten words, among them opossum and jump.

The small p is set lower than the capital P, but it is no smaller. The two letters are equally wide, and from top to bottom the small p measures 1.01 of the capital. The capital P spans from the cap height to the baseline and stays on it. The small p spans from the x-height to the descender line. Measured up from the baseline alone, the small p goes 0.51 as high as the capital P.

Lowercase p in cursive, looped

One long slanted line holds the small p together. The top of that line is at the x-height, and it carries on under the baseline all the way to the descender line.

At the left a blunt tip rests on the baseline. A line sweeps up from the tip to the x-height, where it meets the top of the long slanted line.

At the descender line the slanted line folds into a narrow closed loop on its left side. This lower loop reaches slightly further left than the blunt tip does, which puts the leftmost point of the small p below the baseline. Its left side climbs back over the slanted line at about the baseline and runs on into the underside of a round part.

The round part is on the right, above the baseline. It is closed, and it leans against the slanted line with its top touching the x-height and its bottom on the baseline. Counted with the loop underneath, that makes two enclosed spaces. The small p has no tail and no free end on its right, where the side of the round part is its rightmost point.

Capital P, left open

The capital P has a slanted line with a blunt foot on the baseline, and one big rounded part on the upper right.

At the upper left is a short line with a blunt tip. The tip hangs above the x-height, and from it the line slopes up to the very top of the slanted line.

A little below the top, the rounded part forks away from the slanted line and leaves a V-shaped notch. It arches over to touch the cap height, bulges furthest right above the x-height and sweeps back to the left. It ends in a blunt tip just under the x-height. The tip stops short of the slanted line. That keeps the rounded part open, and the capital P has no enclosed space at all.

Below the rounded part the slanted line stands alone. The bottom of that line, on the baseline, is as far left as the capital P reaches.

Open on the capital, closed on the small p

Each letter has its slanted line and its rounded part, but the rounded part is open on the capital P and closed on the small p. The loop underneath belongs to the small letter only. So does the drop under the baseline: the capital P stands on the baseline and goes no lower.

Six words where the p is drawn differently

Partake, placate, power and prowess start with the small p. In the other six words, the three with the p inside and the three that end in it, the p is drawn differently from the p that stands alone.

Capital R and capital B beside the capital P

This font's capital R is close to its capital P. Both have the same slanted line at the left, and the same rounded part that swings out from just under the top of the line and back in near the x-height. The capital R adds a leg, which goes from the middle down to the baseline at the right. Under its rounded part the capital P has nothing but the slanted line.

The capital B looks like the capital P as well, and the page for b says how.
