Subscript Generator

Subscript changes 44 of the 62 keys into subscript characters for a caption: every digit, and 17 letters of the alphabet in both cases. The remaining 18 keys are left as typed.

Type in the box and each row follows your text. Copy puts a row on your clipboard and the button reads Copied. If copying is refused it reads Selected, and the text stays selected to copy by hand.

Subscript text is Unicode, with SUBSCRIPT in every name

Subscript text made here is not a font. Every result is a Unicode character that carries the word SUBSCRIPT in its name and has its own code point: U+2090, for one, is LATIN SUBSCRIPT SMALL LETTER A.

Of the 44 keys, 34 lead to the Superscripts and Subscripts block.

Every Subscript letter stands in the table twice

The digits 0 to 9 take ten code points in a row, U+2080 to U+2089. The 17 letters are broken into 12 runs, and the longest is four letters long: k to n, at U+2096 to U+2099. The table lists a letter twice, once under its capital key and once under its small one.

i, j, r, u and v come from two other blocks

Five of the letters lie outside the main block. Four are in Phonetic Extensions: i, r, u and v, at U+1D62 to U+1D65. The fifth, j, is U+2C7C in Latin Extended-C. Counted by key that is ten exceptions, five capitals and five small letters.

A and a give the same Subscript character

In Subscript a capital and its small letter share one character, so two keys lead to one code point. There are 17 such pairs, and each shared name says SMALL LETTER:

Nine letters Subscript does not change

B, C, D, F, G, Q, W, Y and Z are left as typed, as capitals and as small letters: 18 keys in all. No digit is among them.

Superscript is the other half

This page is the subscript half of a superscript and subscript generator. For the other half, go to Superscript.
