Cursive U

A cup and a slanted line with an upturned tail make up both letters on this page. Here they are u in cursive, a capital U and a small u, taken from one font. Several letters of that font look like one or the other: the capitals V, Y and W, and the small a, y, w and v. The small u is drawn in eight words too, from uncoated to haiku.

The small u has its two tops at the x-height. The capital U touches the cap height twice, at its hook and at the top of its second line. Set against that, the small u rises 0.51 as far as the capital. Neither letter leaves the baseline, and the small u is 0.64 as wide as the capital.

Capital U, a hooked cup

A blunt tip at the upper left begins a short hook, and that tip is where the capital reaches furthest left. The hook bends over at the cap height. Under the hook a slanted line comes down to the baseline and rounds into a cup, which is open at the top.

The right side of the cup climbs into a second slanted line and merges with it at about the x-height. Above that join the second line is bare. Its blunt top touches the cap height, and nothing on the capital lies further right.

A narrow pointed notch separates the cup from the second line. The point of the notch is nearly halfway up from the baseline to the x-height. The second line bends on the baseline and rises at the right into a tail, whose blunt tip stays in the lower half of the space under the x-height.

Small u, two blunt tops

The small u has two blunt tops, both at the x-height. It has neither a hook nor a line leading in from the left. Under the left top a slanted line runs down and rounds on the baseline into a cup. Low on the outer bend of the cup, between the baseline and the x-height, the small u reaches its furthest left.

The cup stays open at the top, and the small u has no enclosed space. The right-hand line bends on the baseline and flicks up into a short tail. At the tip of that tail the small u is widest to the right. Higher up, the right side of the cup runs into the right-hand line just under its top, and the two stay together down to a pointed notch in the lower half of the letter.

A hook on the capital, none on the small u

The capital U and the small u are both a cup followed by a slanted line that ends in an upturned tail. The hook belongs to the capital alone, and the left side of the small u has a plain blunt top. The cup also meets the second line in different places. On the capital U that is halfway down the letter, at about the x-height, and on the small u it is near the top.

Haiku has the u at the end, after a k

Uncoated, unkind and unshaven start with the small u and an n, and uproot starts with u and p. One of the eight words has the u at the end: haiku, where it follows a k.

V, Y and W in both cases, and the small a

The capital U and the capital V each have a hook at the upper left, a slanted line down to a rounded bottom on the baseline, and a line back up on the right. On the capital U that right-hand line comes back down to the baseline and ends in a tail. On the capital V it stops at the top, with a short bar pointing right.

A hook at the upper left, a cup with a rounded bottom, and a slanted line coming down on the right from the cap height are found in the capital Y as well. Its right-hand line continues below the baseline into a wide loop, where that of the capital U ends on the baseline with an upturned tail.

The capital W has the same hook at the upper left as the capital U, and the same slanted line down to a rounded turn on the baseline. But the capital U has one cup and ends with a tail at the lower right, and the capital W has two cups and ends at the top right with a short bar.

Among the small letters, the small a is compared with the small u on the page for a.

The small y has the same open cup as the small u between the baseline and the x-height, with a slanted line for its right side. On the small y that line goes on below the baseline into a wide loop. On the small u it ends in a short tail curling up from the baseline.

The small w and the small u are both open at the top, and both have rounded bottoms resting on the baseline. The small u has one cup and ends in a tail at the lower right. The small w has two cups and ends at the upper right, at the x-height.

The small v, like the small u, is a single cup, open at the top, with a rounded bottom on the baseline. The small v has a hook at its upper left and stops at the top of its right side. The small u has a plain left side and a second line that comes down to a tail at the baseline.
