Cursive V

A round knob with a short bar tops the right side of the capital V on this page, and the small v has neither. One font drew both letters. Its capital U and capital W look like the capital V, and its small u and small w look like the small v. Seven words with a small v follow further down, the first of them vanity and the last seventh.

The capital V is the one that goes over the cap height, since its knob ends above that line. The small v goes no higher than the x-height. Counted up from the baseline, that is 0.49 of the capital's rise. Neither letter dips under the baseline, and the small v's width is 0.55 of the capital's.

Capital V, a knob and a bar

A hook sits at the upper left of the capital V. The hook's bend touches the cap height, and its blunt tip hangs lower, though still above the x-height.

On the baseline the capital makes one narrow rounded turn. A slanted line stands on the left of the turn, and a longer line on its right. Low on the outer side of the turn is the capital's furthest-left point, slightly further left than the tip of the hook.

The longer line sweeps up to the right and curves only gently. It ends in a round knob, and the knob rises above the cap height. A short bar runs from the knob to the right, sloping down a little. No part of the capital V is further right than the bar's blunt tip.

The capital has that one bend at the baseline and no tail there. Its two sides stand apart, so they enclose nothing.

Small v, a hook and a cup

The upper left of the small v is a hook. The blunt tip of the hook hangs in the upper half of the space under the x-height, and it is the small v's furthest-left point.

At the x-height the hook bends over and becomes a slanted line, which drops to the baseline. There the line rounds into a single cup. The cup is tight at the bottom left and wider toward the upper right.

The small v is furthest right on the right side of the cup, a little under the x-height. That side rises to the x-height and finishes in a rounded top. The top tips slightly back to the left, and it has no tail, bar or knob.

A knob and bar, or a bare top

The two letters are built of the same three parts: a hook, a slanted line and one cup. Each has a single bend on the baseline. They part at the upper right, where the capital V finishes with its knob and short bar and the small v with a bare rounded top.

The v of seventh, an e on each side

Devalue has the small v between e and a, observer has it between r and e, and in seventh an e stands on each side of it. The list these words are taken from has no word that ends in v.

One cup on V, two on W

Two capitals of this font resemble the capital V, the U and the W. Its likeness to the capital U is described on the page for u.

The capital V and the capital W share a hook at the upper left and rounded bottoms on the baseline. Each also has a right-hand line that rises above the cap height and ends in a short bar pointing right. The capital V has one cup, and the capital W has two.

Among the small letters the u and the w resemble the small v, and the small u is likewise compared with it on the page for u.

The small v and the small w both have rounded bottoms on the baseline. Both end at the upper right, at the x-height, without coming back down. The small v has one cup and a hook at its upper left. The small w has two cups, and its upper left is plain.
