Cursive D

Here are the capital D and the small d as one font draws them, and the same small d runs through debtor, stardust and ragweed further down. The page goes through what each letter is made of. It also names a small letter of this font that looks like the small d, the small a.

Print practice sheet

Drawn side by side, the capital D and the small d come out equally tall. Each one touches the cap height, and neither goes under the baseline. Width is what separates them: the small d is 0.65 as wide.

Capital D, a line inside a curve

The capital D is a slanted line inside a large rounded curve. The curve wraps around the line, along the baseline, up the right side and over the top. It touches the cap height at the top, and above the x-height it bulges further right than any other part of the letter.

The big curve is not closed. It ends at the upper left, between the x-height and the cap height, in a blunt tip that hangs free. The top of the slanted line stops short of the curve above it, so a gap is left there.

At the lower left, where the slanted line meets the curve, a small closed loop sits on the baseline. This loop is the capital's only enclosed space, and it is the part of the letter furthest left.

Small d, a tall straight line

On the small d a closed round part stands at the left and a straight slanted line at the right. The round part tops out at the x-height. The line goes on up to the cap height, so the part above the x-height is the line alone, with a blunt top and nothing attached. The top of the line is also the point furthest right.

The round part leans against the line from just under the x-height down to a small notch near the bottom. At its foot the line hooks to the right and ends in a small upturned tail, low down near the baseline.

A line inside the curve, or outside the round part

The capital D and the small d reach the same height, but their shapes differ. On the capital the slanted line stands inside the curve. On the small letter it stands outside the round part, on the right. The small d also closes its round part, while the big curve of the capital stays open.

The d between e and i in credibly

The small d is drawn in ten words here. In credibly it stands between e and i, and in crested, ragweed and unmasked it is the last letter, always after an e.
