Cursive E

The capital E on this page is two open curves, and the small e is a single loop. One font drew both, and it drew the small e again inside the ten words lower down, embassy and mangle among them. Two small letters of that font resemble the small e: the small c and the small l.

Of the two, the capital E is the taller: it goes up to the cap height, and the small e ends at the x-height. That puts the small letter's rise above the baseline at 0.51 of the capital's. Neither e drops under the baseline. The two are closer in width, with the small e 0.86 as wide as the capital.

Capital E, one bent line

The capital E is one line bent into two curves. Both curves open to the right, and the smaller one sits above the larger one. They meet at a short flat piece that points right, just above the x-height.

At the upper right the capital has a blunt tip, which stays under the cap height. The top of the upper curve does touch the cap height. The lower curve reaches further left than the upper one. It sits on the baseline and finishes at the right with a tip that rises partway to the x-height.

The line never passes over itself, and no space is enclosed anywhere in the capital E.

Small e, a leaning loop

A low line comes into the small e from the far left. It starts on the baseline and climbs into a loop. The loop is closed, leans to the right and tops out at the x-height.

Low down, close to the baseline, the left side of the loop crosses the line that came in. To the right of the crossing, the line rounds along the baseline and turns up into a tip. The tip stops low, less than halfway up to the x-height. The enclosed space above the crossing is a slanted teardrop, narrowest at the bottom where the lines cross.

Only the small e crosses itself

The two differ in shape as well as in size. The capital E is two open curves with no loop. The small e is one closed loop, with a line leading in and a tip leading out. It is the only one of the two that crosses itself and encloses a space.

The e inside crudely, target and overcoat

Three words have the small e in the middle: crudely, target and overcoat. In overcoat the e is drawn differently from the e standing alone.

Loops of the small e and the small l

Small l and small c look like the small e in this font.

The small l, like the small e, is one closed loop reached by a line that comes up from the baseline on the left, and a curve turns up again on its right. The loops are what differ. The loop of the small l is tall and narrow and goes up to the cap height, while the loop of the small e ends at the x-height.

What the small c and the small e share, and where they differ, is on the small c's page.
